What is it used for?
Albendazole is used to treat worm infections, including roundworm, pinworm, hookworm and whipworm infections. It may also be prescribed for certain other parasitic infections.

How does it work?
It damages the worms' internal structures and prevents them from using glucose for energy, causing them to die.

How to take/use it
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed. Shake the suspension well before use and measure each dose with a proper measuring device. The dose and treatment duration vary according to the type of infection, age and body weight.

Common side effects
Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, headache and dizziness may occur. Short-term treatment is usually well tolerated.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Albendazole should generally be avoided during pregnancy unless specifically prescribed. Longer treatment may require blood-count and liver-function monitoring. Seek medical advice for severe allergic reactions, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual bruising, or persistent severe symptoms.
