What is it used for?
Disulfiram is used as part of a supervised treatment plan for alcohol dependence. It helps support abstinence by causing an unpleasant reaction if alcohol is consumed.

How does it work?
It blocks the breakdown of alcohol in the body, causing acetaldehyde to build up. This can lead to flushing, headache, nausea, vomiting, palpitations and other unpleasant symptoms after drinking alcohol.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed and under medical supervision. Do not consume alcohol while taking disulfiram, and avoid alcohol-containing products such as some cough syrups, mouthwashes, sauces and personal-care products. Follow the prescriber’s advice about alcohol avoidance after stopping treatment.

Common side effects
Drowsiness, headache, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, metallic or garlic-like taste, bad breath and skin rash.

Precautions
Do not start disulfiram without medical advice or if alcohol may still be present in the body. Tell the doctor about liver disease, heart disease, diabetes, epilepsy, mental-health conditions or pregnancy. Seek medical help for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe weakness, abdominal pain, numbness, tingling or mental changes. Many medicines and products may interact with disulfiram, so provide a complete medication list to the doctor or pharmacist.
