What is it used for?
Povidone iodine 5% is an antiseptic used on the skin to help prevent infection in minor cuts, grazes, burns and wounds, when labelled for this use.

How does it work?
It releases iodine, which kills or reduces many types of bacteria, viruses and fungi on the skin.

How to take/use it
For external use only. Clean the affected area and apply as directed on the product label. Do not use in the eyes or swallow it. Follow the label or healthcare professional’s advice, especially if applying to large or deep wounds.

Common side effects
Temporary stinging, redness, dryness or skin irritation may occur. Rarely, an allergic skin reaction can develop.

Precautions
Do not use if allergic to povidone iodine or iodine-containing products. Avoid prolonged or repeated use over large areas, deep wounds or severe burns unless advised by a healthcare professional. Seek medical advice for worsening redness, swelling, pus, fever or an allergic reaction. People with thyroid problems, those taking lithium, and pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should seek medical advice before extensive or repeated use.
