Composition

Dexamethasone 4 mg.

Uses

Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and suppresses excessive immune-system activity. It may be prescribed for:

- Severe allergic or inflammatory reactions
- Asthma and other inflammatory respiratory conditions
- Rheumatic and autoimmune disorders
- Certain skin and eye inflammatory conditions
- Brain swelling
- Some cancers and blood disorders

The dose and duration depend on the condition being treated.

How to Use

Take exactly as prescribed, preferably with or after food. If prescribed once daily, it is often taken in the morning.

Swallow the tablet with water. Do not suddenly stop dexamethasone after prolonged treatment or higher doses; the dose may need to be tapered gradually by your doctor.

Precautions & Warnings

Tell your doctor if you have:

- Diabetes or high blood sugar
- High blood pressure or heart problems
- Stomach ulcers
- Osteoporosis
- Glaucoma
- Liver or kidney disease
- A current or recurrent infection
- A history of significant mood or psychiatric problems

Dexamethasone can increase blood sugar and blood pressure, reduce immunity, and increase susceptibility to infections. Long-term use can cause osteoporosis, cataracts, glaucoma, weight gain, muscle weakness, and adrenal suppression.

Avoid live vaccines unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Possible Side Effects

Possible effects include increased appetite, indigestion, insomnia, mood changes, increased blood sugar, and fluid retention.

With prolonged or high-dose treatment, side effects can include weight gain, muscle weakness, bone thinning, cataracts, glaucoma, and increased infection risk.

Seek urgent medical attention for severe infection symptoms, severe mood or behavioral changes, vision problems, black stools, severe abdominal pain, or difficulty breathing/facial swelling.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before taking dexamethasone.

Storage

Store at room temperature in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date.

Important Safety Information

Dexamethasone should be used only when prescribed. Do not use it to self-treat ordinary infections, as it can mask symptoms and sometimes worsen infections. If you have been taking it regularly for more than a short course, consult your doctor before stopping.
