Composition
Metronidazole 100 mg + Sodium Chloride 900 mg.
This composition is commonly associated with a metronidazole intravenous infusion preparation, but the exact formulation and route should be confirmed from the product label.
Uses
Metronidazole is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medicine used to treat susceptible infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites, including:
- Intra-abdominal infections
- Pelvic and gynaecological infections
- Certain dental infections
- Anaerobic bacterial infections
- Amoebiasis and giardiasis
- Some infections following surgery
Sodium chloride serves primarily as the diluent/vehicle for the preparation.
How to Use
If this is an injectable infusion, it should be administered intravenously by a healthcare professional. The dose, infusion rate, and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and the patient's age, weight, kidney and liver function.
Do not self-administer or change the dose.
Precautions & Warnings
Tell your doctor if you have:
- Liver disease
- A history of neurological disorders or seizures
- Blood disorders
- An allergy to metronidazole or related medicines
- A condition requiring prolonged treatment
Metronidazole can rarely cause nerve-related problems, particularly with prolonged or repeated treatment. Seek medical advice if you develop numbness, tingling, weakness, or coordination problems.
Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after the last dose, because combining alcohol with metronidazole can cause unpleasant reactions such as nausea, vomiting, flushing, headache, and rapid heartbeat.
Possible Side Effects
Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, headache, dizziness, and a metallic taste.
Urine may become darker during treatment, which is usually harmless.
Seek urgent medical attention for severe allergic reactions, seizures, severe confusion, or significant numbness/tingling or weakness.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, inform your doctor before treatment. Metronidazole may be used in pregnancy when clinically indicated, but the decision should be made by a healthcare professional.
Storage
Store the infusion according to the manufacturer's instructions and protect it from inappropriate temperature, light, or contamination. Injectable preparations should be inspected before administration and handled by healthcare professionals.
Important Safety Information
Use metronidazole only for the infection for which it has been prescribed. Complete the prescribed course unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, particularly warfarin or other anticoagulants, as metronidazole can interact with them.
