Uses
Cefuroxime is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat susceptible bacterial infections, such as:
- Respiratory tract infections
- Sinus, ear, and throat infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Skin and soft-tissue infections
- Certain sexually transmitted infections
- Some other infections caused by susceptible bacteria
It does not treat viral illnesses such as the common cold or influenza.
How to Use
Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Cefuroxime tablets are generally taken after food to improve absorption.
Swallow the tablet with water and complete the prescribed course, even if you feel better. Do not stop treatment or change the dose without medical advice.
Precautions & Warnings
Tell your doctor if you:
- Have an allergy to cefuroxime, other cephalosporins, or penicillin-type antibiotics
- Have kidney disease
- Have previously developed severe diarrhoea or colitis after taking antibiotics
Seek urgent medical attention for facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, severe rash, or other signs of a serious allergic reaction.
Contact your doctor if you develop persistent or bloody diarrhoea, as antibiotic-associated colitis can occur during or after treatment.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Stomach discomfort
- Headache
- Dizziness
Serious allergic reactions and severe antibiotic-associated diarrhoea are uncommon but require prompt medical attention.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Cefuroxime is generally considered suitable during pregnancy when medically indicated. It is also generally compatible with breastfeeding, but inform your doctor before taking it.
Storage
Store at room temperature in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date.
Important Safety Information
Use cefuroxime only for a bacterial infection for which it has been prescribed. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover tablets for another illness. If you miss a dose, take it when remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose; do not take a double dose.
