Composition

Vancomycin Hydrochloride 500 mg.

Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic, commonly supplied as a powder for preparing an injectable solution.

Uses

It is used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, particularly resistant organisms such as MRSA. It may be prescribed for:

- Bloodstream infections (sepsis)
- Pneumonia
- Bone and joint infections
- Skin and soft-tissue infections
- Endocarditis
- Other serious Gram-positive bacterial infections

Important: Oral vancomycin is used for certain _Clostridioides difficile_ intestinal infections, whereas IV vancomycin is used for systemic infections.

How to Use

If this is the injectable formulation, it must be reconstituted and administered by a healthcare professional, usually by slow IV infusion.

The dose and frequency are individualized based on body weight, kidney function, infection severity, and the causative organism. Blood levels may be monitored during treatment.

Rapid infusion can cause flushing, itching, rash, low blood pressure, or a reaction known as vancomycin infusion reaction.

Precautions & Warnings

Tell your doctor if you have:

- Kidney disease
- Hearing or balance problems
- Dehydration
- Previous reaction to vancomycin
- Previous significant antibiotic allergies

Vancomycin can cause kidney injury and, rarely, hearing or balance problems. The risk increases with high exposure, prolonged treatment, or use with other medicines that can damage the kidneys or ears.

Possible Side Effects

Possible side effects include nausea, headache, injection-site irritation, and infusion-related flushing or itching.

Seek urgent medical attention for:

- Difficulty breathing or facial/throat swelling
- Severe rash or blistering
- Fainting or severe low blood pressure
- Significant hearing changes or severe dizziness
- Markedly reduced urine output

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Vancomycin can be used when medically necessary, but the benefits and potential risks should be assessed by your doctor.

Storage

Store the unopened vial according to the manufacturer's instructions. Reconstituted and diluted solutions have specific stability and storage requirements and should be prepared and handled by healthcare professionals.

Important Safety Information

Vancomycin should be used only when appropriate for a bacterial infection and under medical supervision. Kidney function and, when indicated, vancomycin blood levels should be monitored. Tell your healthcare provider about all medicines you take, particularly those that may affect the kidneys or hearing.
