What is it used for?
Metformin 1000 mg is mainly used to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. It may be used alone or with other diabetes medicines, along with a suitable diet and regular physical activity.

How does it work?
It reduces the amount of glucose made by the liver and helps the body use insulin more effectively. This lowers blood sugar levels.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with or after food, to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet as directed and do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain or discomfort, gas, reduced appetite and a metallic taste. These effects may improve as the body adjusts.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is kidney or liver disease, heart failure, severe infection, dehydration or heavy alcohol use. Kidney function should be checked regularly. Inform the doctor before a contrast-dye scan or surgery, as metformin may need to be temporarily stopped. Long-term treatment may reduce vitamin B12 levels. Seek urgent medical help for severe weakness, breathing difficulty, unusual sleepiness, persistent vomiting or severe abdominal pain.
