What is it used for?
Metformin 500 mg is mainly used to help control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. It may be used alone or with other diabetes medicines, along with a suitable diet and physical activity.

How does it work?
It lowers the amount of glucose made by the liver and helps the body use insulin more effectively. This helps reduce blood sugar levels.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with or after food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet with water and do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain or discomfort, gas, reduced appetite, and a metallic taste. These effects often improve as the body adjusts.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is kidney or liver disease, heavy alcohol use, severe infection, dehydration, or heart or breathing problems. Kidney function may need checking during treatment. Metformin may need to be temporarily stopped before certain procedures using iodinated contrast dye. Seek urgent medical help for severe weakness, unusual sleepiness, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting, or severe stomach pain.
