Composition
Piperacillin 4 g \+ Tazobactam 0.5 g.
This is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic + beta-lactamase inhibitor combination, commonly supplied as a powder for IV injection/infusion.
- Piperacillin 4 g — kills susceptible bacteria by interfering with bacterial cell-wall formation.
- Tazobactam 0.5 g — inhibits certain beta-lactamase enzymes that can make bacteria resistant to piperacillin.
Uses
It is used for moderate to severe bacterial infections, particularly in hospital settings, including:
- Pneumonia, including hospital-acquired infections
- Complicated urinary tract infections
- Intra-abdominal infections
- Skin and soft-tissue infections
- Severe bloodstream infections
- Certain gynaecological infections
- Other infections caused by susceptible bacteria
It has activity against many Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria, including _Pseudomonas aeruginosa_.
It does not treat viral infections such as influenza or the common cold.
How to Use
This medicine is administered intravenously by a healthcare professional.
The dose and dosing interval depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function, age, and clinical response. Dose adjustment is usually required in significant kidney impairment.
Do not self-inject or alter the prescribed dose.
Precautions & Warnings
Tell your doctor if you have:
- Allergy to penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, or other beta-lactam antibiotics
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- A history of seizures
- A history of severe antibiotic-associated diarrhoea or colitis
- A bleeding or clotting disorder
Piperacillin/tazobactam can occasionally affect kidney function, blood counts, electrolytes, and liver function, particularly during prolonged treatment.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea or vomiting
- Headache
- Injection-site reactions
- Skin rash
Seek urgent medical attention for difficulty breathing, facial/throat swelling, severe rash, seizures, persistent or bloody diarrhoea, unusual bleeding, or significantly reduced urine output.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, inform your doctor. It may be used during pregnancy when the benefits of treating a significant bacterial infection outweigh potential risks.
Storage
Unopened vials should be stored according to the manufacturer's instructions. Reconstituted and diluted solutions have specific stability requirements and should be prepared and handled by healthcare professionals.
