Composition
Gamma Benzene Hexachloride 1% w/v + Cetrimide 0.1% w/v.
This is a topical antiparasitic/antiseptic preparation. Gamma benzene hexachloride is also known as lindane.
- Gamma benzene hexachloride (lindane) — kills certain parasites, including the mites responsible for scabies and lice.
- Cetrimide — an antiseptic that helps reduce microorganisms on the skin.
Uses
It may be used for:
- Scabies
- Lice infestation
- Certain superficial skin infestations where prescribed
Lindane is generally not a first-choice treatment for scabies or lice because of its potential for neurological toxicity. Safer alternatives are often preferred.
How to Use
Use only as specifically directed by a healthcare professional and follow the product label carefully.
Avoid applying to:
- Eyes
- Mouth
- Genitals or mucous membranes
- Broken, inflamed, or extensively irritated skin
Do not apply repeatedly or use larger amounts than recommended. Wash hands after application unless the hands themselves are being treated.
Precautions & Warnings
Lindane can be absorbed through the skin and can cause serious neurological toxicity, including seizures.
Do not use it without medical supervision if you:
- Have a seizure disorder or history of seizures
- Have significant skin inflammation or broken skin
- Are an infant or young child
- Are elderly or have a very low body weight
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Do not use it together with other medicines or products that may increase the risk of seizures unless your doctor approves.
Possible Side Effects
Possible effects include:
- Skin irritation
- Burning or itching
- Dryness
- Rash
Stop using it and seek urgent medical attention if you develop tremors, severe dizziness, confusion, muscle twitching, or seizures.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Lindane should generally be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless specifically prescribed by a doctor. It can be absorbed through the skin and may pose risks to the infant.
Storage
Store tightly closed at room temperature, away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Important Safety Information
Do not use lindane routinely or repeatedly. It should generally be reserved for situations where safer treatments have failed or cannot be used. For suspected scabies or lice, a healthcare professional can recommend a safer first-line treatment.
If this product is being considered for scabies, head lice, or another specific condition, tell me which one and I can explain the usual treatment and precautions.
