What is it used for?
Amiodarone is used to treat and prevent serious irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias), including fast or uneven heartbeats. It is usually prescribed when other treatments are not suitable or have not worked.

How does it work?
It helps control abnormal heart rhythms by slowing and stabilising the electrical signals in the heart.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day, with or without food as advised. Swallow the tablet with water. Do not stop treatment or change the dose without medical advice, even if the heartbeat feels normal.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite, tiredness, dizziness, tremors and increased sensitivity to sunlight may occur.

Precautions
Regular medical checks may be needed for the heart, thyroid, liver, lungs and eyes during treatment. Tell the doctor about thyroid, lung, liver or heart problems, and about all other medicines being taken, as amiodarone has important drug interactions. Avoid grapefruit unless the doctor advises otherwise, use sun protection, and seek medical advice for new or worsening breathlessness, persistent cough, fainting, severe heartbeat changes, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or vision changes. Inform the doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
