What is it used for?
Amiodarone is used to treat and prevent certain serious abnormal heart rhythms, including fast or irregular heartbeats. It is usually prescribed when other treatments are not suitable or have not worked.

How does it work?
It slows and stabilises the electrical signals in the heart, helping the heart beat more regularly.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet with water. Do not stop taking it suddenly unless advised by a doctor. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice unless the prescriber says they are safe.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, constipation, tiredness, dizziness, and increased sensitivity to sunlight may occur. Bluish-grey skin discolouration or vision changes can occur with longer-term use.

Precautions
Regular medical monitoring may be needed, including heart, thyroid, liver, lung, and eye checks. Tell the doctor about existing thyroid, liver, lung, or heart problems and all other medicines being taken, as amiodarone has many important drug interactions. Seek medical advice urgently for worsening breathlessness, persistent cough, fainting, a very slow heartbeat, yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe skin reaction, or new vision problems. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
