What is it used for?
Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, chest, urinary tract, skin and teeth, when prescribed by a doctor. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria by damaging their protective cell wall. Clavulanic acid helps prevent some bacteria from making enzymes that can stop amoxicillin from working.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed and preferably with a meal to reduce stomach upset. Swallow with water and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not take leftover antibiotics or share them with others.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, indigestion, skin rash and oral or vaginal thrush may occur.

Precautions
Do not use if there is a known serious allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, clavulanic acid or related cephalosporin antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney or liver disease, previous antibiotic-related jaundice or liver problems, glandular fever, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, a severe skin rash, persistent or bloody diarrhoea, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
