What is it used for?
Ampicillin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from building their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by a doctor. Take or receive the medicine exactly as directed and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. The dose and route depend on the type and severity of the infection.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to ampicillin, penicillin or related antibiotics. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe rash. Contact a doctor for severe or persistent diarrhoea, especially during or after treatment. Tell the doctor about kidney problems and any other medicines being used.
