What is it used for?
Apixaban is an anticoagulant used to prevent blood clots and reduce the risk of stroke in people with certain irregular heart rhythms. It is also used to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and to help prevent these clots from returning. It may also be used to prevent clots after certain hip or knee replacement surgeries.

How does it work?
Apixaban blocks factor Xa, a substance needed for blood clot formation. This reduces the blood's ability to form harmful clots.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, at the same times each day, with or without food. Do not stop or change the dose without medical advice, as this may increase the risk of clots. If a dose is missed, follow the prescriber's instructions.

Common side effects
Easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding from the gums, heavier menstrual bleeding, nausea, and anaemia. Any unusual or prolonged bleeding requires medical attention.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any history of bleeding, stomach ulcers, kidney or liver problems, or planned surgery or dental treatment. Avoid starting aspirin, painkillers such as ibuprofen, or other blood-thinning medicines unless advised by a doctor. Seek urgent medical help for severe or uncontrollable bleeding, blood in the urine or stools, vomiting blood, severe headache, or an injury to the head.
