What is it used for?
Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itching, watery eyes, hives and other allergic skin reactions. It may also be prescribed for other conditions, such as poor appetite, only when directed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It blocks the action of histamine, a substance involved in allergic reactions. It also has antiserotonin effects, which may contribute to some of its other prescribed uses.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as directed by the doctor or as stated on the label. Swallow the tablet with water. Do not take more than recommended. Avoid driving or operating machinery until its effect is known.

Common side effects
Sleepiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, nausea and increased appetite or weight gain.

Precautions
Avoid alcohol and other medicines that cause sleepiness unless advised by a doctor. Use medical advice if there is glaucoma, difficulty passing urine, prostate enlargement, asthma, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek medical help for severe drowsiness, confusion, breathing difficulty or a serious allergic reaction.
