What is it used for?
Atorvastatin is used to lower high levels of cholesterol and other fats in the blood. It also helps reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at increased cardiovascular risk.

How does it work?
It blocks an enzyme involved in making cholesterol in the liver. This lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol and helps reduce fatty build-up in the arteries.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed. Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food. Continue taking it regularly and do not stop without medical advice.

Common side effects
Headache, nausea, indigestion, diarrhoea and muscle pain may occur. Contact a doctor if muscle pain or weakness is severe or persistent.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about liver disease, heavy alcohol use, thyroid problems or a history of muscle problems. Seek medical advice promptly for unexplained muscle pain, weakness, dark urine or yellowing of the skin or eyes. It is generally not used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Tell the doctor about all other medicines, including antibiotics and antifungal medicines, before starting treatment.
