What is it used for?
Atorvastatin is used to lower high cholesterol, especially LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides. It also helps reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at increased cardiovascular risk.

How does it work?
It blocks an enzyme involved in cholesterol production in the liver. This lowers cholesterol levels in the blood.

How to take/use it
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed. It may be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. Do not stop or change the dose without medical advice.

Common side effects
Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, indigestion, and muscle aches may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about liver disease, kidney problems, thyroid problems, heavy alcohol use, or any unexplained muscle pain or weakness. Seek medical advice promptly for severe muscle pain, weakness, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. It should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Tell the doctor about all other medicines, including supplements, because some can increase the risk of side effects.
