What is it used for?
Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ear, throat, chest, urinary tract, skin and teeth. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming a protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. It may usually be taken with or without food. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has previously been a serious allergy to amoxicillin, penicillin or related antibiotics. Seek urgent medical help for swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty or a severe rash. Contact a doctor if diarrhoea is severe, persistent or contains blood. Tell the doctor about kidney problems or any previous antibiotic-related liver problems.
