What is it used for?
Cefuroxime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, chest, urinary tract and skin. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. Swallow the tablet with water. Do not skip doses or stop treatment early unless advised by a doctor.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, headache and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to cefuroxime, cephalosporins or other penicillin-type antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney problems or previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin rash.
