What is it used for?
Atenolol is mainly used to treat high blood pressure. It may also be prescribed for angina (heart-related chest pain), certain irregular heartbeats and other heart conditions.

How does it work?
It is a beta-blocker that slows the heart rate and reduces the force of the heartbeat. This lowers blood pressure and reduces the heart’s need for oxygen.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. Do not stop it suddenly, as this may worsen heart problems. If a dose is missed, follow the instructions provided by the doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects
Tiredness, dizziness, slow heartbeat, cold hands or feet, nausea and diarrhoea may occur. Seek medical advice if side effects are severe or persistent.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is asthma or other breathing disease, a very slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, heart failure, circulation problems, diabetes or kidney disease. Atenolol may hide some warning signs of low blood sugar. Avoid driving or operating machinery if dizzy. Do not stop treatment suddenly. Tell the doctor about pregnancy, breastfeeding and all other medicines being used.
