What is it used for?
Atenolol is used to treat high blood pressure and certain heart conditions, including angina (heart-related chest pain) and some irregular heart rhythms.

How does it work?
It is a beta-blocker that slows the heartbeat and reduces the force with which the heart pumps. This lowers blood pressure and reduces the heart's workload.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow with water. Do not stop atenolol suddenly, and do not take a double dose if a dose is missed; follow the package leaflet or ask a pharmacist for advice.

Common side effects
Tiredness, dizziness, headache, cold hands or feet, slow heartbeat, nausea and diarrhoea.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is asthma or other breathing disease, a slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, heart failure, circulation problems, diabetes or kidney disease. Atenolol may hide warning signs of low blood sugar. Avoid stopping it suddenly. Seek medical advice for fainting, severe breathing difficulty or an unusually slow heartbeat. Tell the doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
