What is it used for?
Atorvastatin is used to lower high cholesterol, especially LDL (bad) cholesterol, and to help reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at increased cardiovascular risk.

How does it work?
It blocks an enzyme involved in making cholesterol in the liver. This lowers LDL cholesterol and helps reduce the build-up of fatty deposits in blood vessels.

How to take/use it
Take it by mouth exactly as prescribed, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. Continue dietary and lifestyle advice given by the doctor. Do not stop it without medical advice.

Common side effects
Headache, nausea, indigestion, diarrhoea, and muscle aches or pain may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about liver disease, heavy alcohol use, or any unexplained muscle pain or weakness. Seek medical advice promptly for severe muscle pain, weakness, or dark urine. It is generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tell the doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines, as some can interact with atorvastatin.
