What is it used for?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the chest and throat, ears, skin, and sexually transmitted infections. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply.

How to take/use it
Take it only when prescribed, exactly as directed by the doctor. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food unless otherwise advised. Do not share or reuse leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, indigestion, and headache.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about allergies to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics, liver disease, heart rhythm problems, or a history of prolonged QT interval. Inform the doctor about all other medicines being taken because interactions are possible. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe rash, breathing difficulty, or a fast or irregular heartbeat.
