What is it used for?
Azithromycin 500 mg is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the chest and lungs, throat, ears, skin, and some sexually transmitted infections. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food. Do not take a double dose if a dose is missed; follow the prescriber’s instructions. Keep antacids containing aluminium or magnesium separated from azithromycin as advised by a doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, vomiting, indigestion, and headache.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is an allergy to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics, liver disease, an irregular heartbeat, or a history of heart rhythm problems. Inform the doctor about all other medicines, especially those that can affect heart rhythm. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, a fast or irregular heartbeat, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
