What is it used for?
Azithromycin 500 mg is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the chest, throat, ears, skin and sexually transmitted infections. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making proteins needed for their growth and multiplication.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food, unless otherwise advised. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover medicine. Keep aluminium- or magnesium-containing antacids separate from azithromycin as advised by a doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion and headache may occur. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, rash, breathing difficulty, fainting or a fast or irregular heartbeat.

Precautions
Do not use it if allergic to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics. Tell the doctor about liver disease, heart rhythm problems, low potassium or magnesium, myasthenia gravis, or if taking medicines that can affect heart rhythm. Use only on medical advice during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Complete the prescribed course and do not use it for viral infections.
