What is it used for?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the chest, throat, ears, skin and sexually transmitted infections. It does not work against viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food unless advised otherwise. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, vomiting and headache.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is an allergy to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics, liver disease, an irregular heartbeat or a history of prolonged QT interval. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, a fast or irregular heartbeat, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
