What is it used for?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the chest, throat, ears, skin and reproductive system. It does not work against viral infections such as common colds or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making proteins needed for their growth and survival.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food unless the prescriber advises otherwise. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them for a future illness.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, vomiting and headache.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about an allergy to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics, liver disease, heart rhythm problems or a history of prolonged QT interval. Tell the doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines being taken. Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, facial or throat swelling, difficulty breathing, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or a fast or irregular heartbeat.
