What is it used for?
Azithromycin 500 mg is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the chest, throat, skin and soft tissues, and some sexually transmitted infections. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. It may usually be taken with or without food; follow the instructions on the prescription. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover medicine.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, vomiting and headache.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about allergies to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics, liver disease, heart rhythm problems, or previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, or a fast or irregular heartbeat. Tell the doctor about all other medicines, especially those that can affect heart rhythm or antacids containing aluminium or magnesium.
