What is it used for?
Cabergoline is mainly used to reduce abnormally high prolactin levels. High prolactin can cause irregular periods, infertility, unwanted breast milk production, or may be due to a prolactin-producing pituitary tumour. It may also be prescribed to prevent or stop breast milk production when medically necessary.

How does it work?
Cabergoline acts like dopamine, a natural chemical in the brain. This reduces the release of prolactin from the pituitary gland.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. It is usually taken by mouth, preferably with food if it causes nausea. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, tiredness, constipation, stomach discomfort and low blood pressure, especially when standing up.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about heart-valve disease, high or low blood pressure, heart or lung problems, kidney disease, or a history of mental health problems. It may cause dizziness or sleepiness, so take care when driving or standing up. Seek medical advice for chest pain, breathing difficulty, persistent cough, swelling, fainting, or unusual changes in behaviour. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only as specifically advised by the doctor.
