What is it used for?
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some urinary, gastrointestinal, respiratory, skin and other infections. It does not work against viral infections such as the common cold or flu. It should be used only when prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It stops bacteria from making and repairing their genetic material, which prevents them from growing and causes them to die.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the course unless the prescriber advises otherwise. Swallow with water. Do not take it together with antacids or supplements containing iron, calcium, magnesium or zinc; follow the product or prescriber’s instructions about spacing. Avoid taking it with dairy products alone. Do not share or self-medicate with this antibiotic.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pain, headache and dizziness may occur.

Precautions
Seek medical advice urgently for tendon pain or swelling, numbness or tingling, severe mood or nervous-system changes, severe or persistent diarrhoea, rash, breathing difficulty or swelling. Tell the prescriber about tendon problems, nerve disorders, myasthenia gravis, heart-rhythm problems, kidney disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Ciprofloxacin can interact with several medicines, so provide a complete list of medicines and supplements being used.
