What is it used for?
Ciprofloxacin is a prescription antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the urinary tract, lungs, skin, stomach or intestines. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making the DNA they need to grow and survive.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Swallow with plenty of water. Avoid taking it at the same time as antacids or supplements containing calcium, iron, zinc or magnesium; follow the prescribed advice about timing. Do not take it with dairy products alone.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pain, headache and dizziness may occur.

Precautions
Use only on medical advice. Stop taking it and seek medical help for tendon pain or swelling, numbness or tingling, severe mood or nerve-related symptoms, a severe or persistent diarrhoea, or signs of a serious allergy. Tell the prescriber about pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney problems, tendon disorders, heart-rhythm problems or medicines being taken. Avoid unnecessary strenuous exercise if tendon pain develops.
