What is it used for?
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the urinary tract, lungs, skin, bones and joints, and digestive system. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking enzymes needed for bacterial DNA replication and growth.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed and complete the course unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise. Swallow with plenty of water. Do not take it at the same time as antacids or supplements containing iron, calcium, magnesium or zinc; follow the recommended time gap. Do not take with dairy products alone.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache and dizziness. Stop taking it and seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea, or pain or swelling in a tendon.

Precautions
Tell the prescriber about kidney problems, tendon disorders, nerve problems, heart rhythm problems, myasthenia gravis, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Ciprofloxacin can rarely cause tendon damage, nerve symptoms, serious allergic reactions and changes in heart rhythm. Avoid strenuous exercise if tendon pain or swelling develops. Check with a healthcare professional before using it with other medicines, especially corticosteroids, warfarin, medicines affecting heart rhythm, or diabetes medicines.
