What is it used for?
Carbimazole is used to treat an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), which can cause symptoms such as a fast heartbeat, sweating, weight loss and nervousness.

How does it work?
It reduces the thyroid gland’s production of thyroid hormones, helping bring hormone levels back towards normal.

How to take/use it
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed and do not stop treatment without medical advice. Regular blood tests may be needed to monitor thyroid function and adjust treatment.

Common side effects
Nausea, headache, skin rash, itching and joint pain may occur. These are often mild, but medical advice should be sought if they persist or worsen.

Precautions
Seek urgent medical advice if fever, sore throat, mouth ulcers, unusual bruising or severe tiredness develop, as these may indicate a serious blood disorder. Contact a doctor promptly for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or severe abdominal pain, which may indicate liver problems. Tell the doctor if pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding. Do not take it without medical supervision and attend recommended blood tests.
