What is it used for?
Carvedilol is used to treat high blood pressure and certain heart conditions, including heart failure. It may also be prescribed after a heart attack when the heart’s pumping function is reduced.

How does it work?
It blocks certain hormones that increase heart rate and blood pressure. This helps the heart beat more slowly and efficiently and reduces the strain on the heart.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with food, and at the same time each day. Do not stop taking it suddenly unless advised by a doctor. If a dose is missed, follow the doctor’s or pharmacist’s instructions.

Common side effects
Dizziness, tiredness, low blood pressure, slow heartbeat, headache, diarrhoea and cold hands or feet may occur. Dizziness may be more noticeable when standing up.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision if there is asthma or other breathing disease, a very slow heartbeat, heart block, low blood pressure, diabetes, liver disease or worsening heart failure. Carvedilol may hide some warning signs of low blood sugar. Avoid driving or operating machinery until its effects are known. Seek medical help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, swelling or rapid weight gain.
