What is it used for?
Carvedilol is used to treat high blood pressure and certain heart conditions, including heart failure and reduced heart function after a heart attack. It may help reduce the heart’s workload and lower the risk of heart-related complications.

How does it work?
It blocks certain stress signals that make the heart beat faster and blood vessels tighten. This slows the heartbeat, relaxes blood vessels and reduces the heart’s workload.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with food, and at the same time each day. Do not stop it suddenly, as this may worsen heart problems. If a dose is missed, follow the prescriber’s instructions rather than taking extra medicine.

Common side effects
Dizziness, tiredness, weakness, low blood pressure, slow heartbeat, cold hands or feet, diarrhoea and nausea may occur. Dizziness may be more noticeable when starting treatment or increasing the dose.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision if there is asthma or severe breathing disease, a very slow heartbeat, heart block, low blood pressure, worsening heart failure, diabetes or liver disease. Carvedilol may hide some warning signs of low blood sugar. Rise slowly if dizzy, and seek medical help for fainting, severe breathing difficulty, swelling or a very slow heartbeat.
