What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the throat, ears, airways, urinary tract and other areas. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from forming their protective cell wall, which kills the bacteria or prevents them from multiplying.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by a doctor, with or without food. Complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve, and do not share it with others. Do not use leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and headache. Skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporins or certain penicillin antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney disease or previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe skin rash or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
