What is it used for?
Cefuroxime axetil is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, lungs, urinary tract and skin. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming a protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and preferably after food to improve absorption. Swallow the tablet whole with water and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not take extra doses if one is missed; follow the prescriber’s instructions.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, headache and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there has previously been an allergy to cefuroxime, cephalosporins, penicillins or other antibiotics, or if there is kidney disease. Seek urgent medical help for swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty or a severe rash. Contact a doctor for severe or persistent diarrhoea, as this may rarely indicate a serious intestinal infection. Antacids and medicines that reduce stomach acid may affect absorption; check with a doctor or pharmacist before using them together.
