What is it used for?
Cefuroxime axetil is an antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections, including infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, chest, urinary tract and skin. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall, which stops the infection from growing and spreading.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed. Swallow the tablet whole with water, preferably after food, and complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve. Do not share this medicine or use leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, headache and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to cefuroxime, cephalosporins or certain penicillin-type antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney problems, previous antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and all other medicines being taken. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, a severe skin reaction or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
