What is it used for?
Cefuroxime axetil with clavulanic acid is a prescription antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, including certain infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, lungs, urinary tract and skin. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Cefuroxime kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall. Clavulanic acid helps protect cefuroxime from enzymes produced by some resistant bacteria.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. Take it after food if advised, and swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not share or reuse leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain or discomfort, indigestion, headache and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to cefuroxime, other cephalosporins, penicillins or related antibiotics. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe rash. Contact a doctor if diarrhoea is severe, persistent or bloody. Inform the doctor about kidney problems, liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and all other medicines being used.
