What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections. It does not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making their protective cell wall, which helps clear the infection.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by the doctor. If supplied as a powder, prepare it with water exactly as directed on the label or by the pharmacist. Shake the suspension well before each use and measure each dose with an oral syringe or measuring spoon. Complete the prescribed course unless advised otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and indigestion. Mild rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not use if allergic to cefixime or other cephalosporin antibiotics. Tell the doctor about any previous serious reaction to penicillin or other antibiotics, or kidney problems. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea, blood in the stool, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a widespread rash.
