What is it used for?
Cefuroxime is an antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections, such as infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, chest, urinary tract and skin, when prescribed by a healthcare professional. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall, which stops the infection from spreading.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. Swallow oral tablets with water; taking cefuroxime tablets after food may improve absorption. Do not share this antibiotic or use leftover doses.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to cefuroxime, cephalosporins or other beta-lactam antibiotics unless specifically advised by a doctor. Tell the doctor about kidney disease, previous antibiotic-related severe diarrhoea, or any history of serious medicine allergies. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
