What is it used for?
Cefuroxime sodium is an injectable antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin, abdomen, bones and joints. It may also be used to prevent infections during some surgeries, as prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It is a cephalosporin antibiotic that kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from building their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function and medical advice. It should not be self-administered.

Common side effects
Pain or inflammation at the injection site, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to cefuroxime, other cephalosporins or certain penicillin-type antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney problems, previous antibiotic-related severe diarrhoea, or a history of serious allergies. Seek medical attention for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a widespread skin reaction. Use only when prescribed, as antibiotics do not treat viral infections.
