What is it used for?
Cefuroxime with clavulanic acid is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ear, throat, lungs, urinary tract and skin, when prescribed by a doctor. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Cefuroxime kills bacteria by interfering with their cell-wall formation. Clavulanic acid helps protect cefuroxime from enzymes made by some bacteria, improving its action.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed and complete the recommended course, even if symptoms improve. Take each dose with or after food if directed on the product label or by the prescriber. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, indigestion, headache and skin rash may occur. Mild fungal infections such as oral or vaginal thrush are also possible.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to cefuroxime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or certain penicillin-type antibiotics, unless specifically advised by a doctor. Tell the doctor about kidney disease, previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin reaction. Contact a doctor for severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
