What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, blood, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, bones and joints, and meningitis. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Ceftriaxone is given as an injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the infection. Complete the prescribed course unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; rash; and changes in blood test results.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is an allergy to ceftriaxone, other cephalosporin antibiotics, or penicillin. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a widespread or blistering rash. Use only under medical supervision, especially in newborn babies or people with liver or kidney problems.
