What is it used for?
Cefuroxime axetil is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, such as infections of the throat, sinuses, ears, lungs, urinary tract and skin, when the bacteria are sensitive to it. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take it by mouth exactly as prescribed, preferably after food, and complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics or skip doses. If a dose is missed, follow the instructions provided by the doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, headache and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to cefuroxime, other cephalosporins or certain penicillin-type antibiotics. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin reaction. Contact a doctor if diarrhoea is severe, persistent or contains blood, as this may occur during or after antibiotic treatment. Tell the doctor about kidney problems, pregnancy, breastfeeding or other medicines being used.
