What is it used for?
Chlorthalidone is mainly used to lower high blood pressure. It may also be prescribed to reduce swelling caused by excess fluid retention.

How does it work?
It is a thiazide-like diuretic, often called a water tablet. It helps the kidneys remove extra salt and water from the body, which lowers blood pressure and reduces fluid buildup.

How to take/use it
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Follow the dose and schedule on the prescription, and do not stop it without medical advice. It may increase urination, so taking it earlier in the day may be helpful if advised by the prescriber. Regular blood pressure and blood tests may be needed.

Common side effects
Increased urination, dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness, dehydration, and changes in blood salt or potassium levels. It may also increase uric acid and trigger gout in some people.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is kidney or liver disease, gout, diabetes, low blood sodium or potassium, or an allergy to sulfonamide medicines. Seek medical advice for severe dizziness, fainting, muscle cramps, unusual weakness, confusion, or signs of dehydration. Discuss its use during pregnancy or breastfeeding with a doctor.
