What is it used for?
Chlorthalidone is mainly used to treat high blood pressure. It may also be prescribed to reduce excess fluid retention (swelling) in certain conditions.

How does it work?
It is a thiazide-like diuretic, or water tablet. It helps the kidneys remove extra salt and water from the body, which lowers blood pressure and reduces fluid buildup.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably at the same time each day. It may increase urination, so taking it earlier in the day can help avoid frequent urination at night. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Increased urination, dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness, and low levels of potassium or sodium in the blood. It may also increase uric acid or blood sugar levels.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision if there is kidney or liver disease, gout, diabetes, dehydration, or a history of low potassium or sodium. Drink fluids as advised and rise slowly if feeling dizzy. Regular blood pressure and blood tests may be needed. Seek medical advice for severe weakness, confusion, fainting, muscle cramps, or an irregular heartbeat.
