What is it used for?
Amoxycillin with clavulanate is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, lungs, skin, urinary tract and teeth. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxycillin kills susceptible bacteria by interfering with their cell wall. Clavulanate helps protect amoxycillin from enzymes that can make some bacteria resistant to it.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed, preferably with a meal to reduce stomach upset. Complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve. Do not share it or take extra doses to make up for a missed dose.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, indigestion, skin rash and thrush may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxycillin, clavulanate or related antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems and any previous antibiotic-related jaundice or liver reaction. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use only when prescribed, as unnecessary antibiotics can contribute to resistance.
